Open source ERP: what it is, its benefits and what to consider before choosing one
What open source ERP really means, the benefits it offers and the questions to ask a partner before choosing, using iDempiere as an example.

When a company changes its management software, sooner or later someone suggests an open source ERP. Is it a good idea? It depends on what you are looking for and who implements it. Let's look at what it really means and what to consider.
What does open source ERP mean?
An open source ERP is a business management platform whose code can be accessed and modified. It does not mean “free” and it does not mean “do it yourself”: it means the company does not depend on a single supplier to understand how its own system works or to develop it further.
The benefits
- Freedom to customise: the system adapts to your processes, not the other way round.
- Simpler integrations with machinery, portals, e-commerce, document management, CRM and analytics tools, via APIs and web services.
- No rigid lock-in: the system can evolve over time, even with different partners.
- Modular architecture: you activate the functions you need and add more as your requirements grow.
- Suitable for multi-company and multi-site groups, including international ones.
What to consider before choosing
The software is only half of the result. The other half is the expertise of those who configure, maintain and develop it. Before choosing, it is worth asking:
- Does the partner know the version localised for the Italian market (tax, e-invoicing, banking)?
- Do they have experience in your sector?
- How do they handle data migration, testing and phased go-live?
- Who looks after support, updates and the infrastructure the system runs on?
iDempiere and the Italian community
Labinf Sistemi has been working with open source technologies since 2010 and in 2016 co-founded the ERP Open Source Italia association. On the iDempiere platform we deliver configurations, industry-specific customisations and integrations: from accounting to sales and purchasing, from warehouse to production with MRP, through to job management, workflow and reporting.
A real example: a plastic packaging company with over 100 employees replaced its management software, in-house applications and Excel spreadsheets with iDempiere. We describe it in the case study.
Considering an open source ERP? Let's talk: we start from your processes, not from the software.
